The Nation of Gods and Earths (NGE) is a religion that was started in 1964 which borrows ideas from traditional Islam. The NGE is also known as the Five Percent Nation of Islam, which refers to the NGE’s explanation that 5% of black people are chosen ‘Gods’ of the world and Islam is the black man’s natural culture (but not religion):
The 5%, who are the enlightened divine beings, the poor righteous teachers, having repossessed knowledge of the truth regarding the foundations of life and of oneself, and seek to liberate the 85% through education. (Wiki)
The Conflict with Traditional Islam.
In traditional Islam it is the worst form of blasphemy to liken any thing or being to God – so the teachings of the Five Percent Nation are viewed as condemnable heresy. Five Percenter men refer to eachother as ‘Gods’ and women are called ‘Earths.’ This concept is explained by the above passage that states that 5% of black men are “enlightened and divine beings,” but is made convoluted by turning the Arabic name of God, ‘Allah,’ into a simple acronym…according to the Five Percent Nation’s official website:
[...] the blackman is god and his proper name is ALLAH. Arm,Leg, Leg, Arm, Head.
The Five Percent Nation’s logo further distorts the link to traditional, monotheistic Islam, by stating ‘In the Name of Allah.’ The Arabic translation of this statement, “bismillah,“ is probably the most frequently recited phrase in Muslim worship, and it carries intense intrinsic value. That said, the term ‘Five Percent Nation of Islam’ is a paradox in itself.
Appeal to Urban Blacks.
The religion is popular among urban black youth, and serves as a positive influence that distracts otherwise trouble-bound youth from illegal activities, providing a structured purpose to live. As Gods, they are required to treat their bodies with utmost respect, eliminating any contamination that comes from drug use; furthermore, it is their duty to educate the less-aware and nurture the people of their community…thus reducing the ‘black on black’ crime phenomenon. In the United States 94% of black homicide victims are killed by blacks each year (US-DOJ).
Accessibility to the Five Percent Nation is increased with the popularity of the religion amongst popular urban musicians like Ghostface Killah (disputed), Erykah Badu, Nas, Rakim, and Busta Rhymes (disputed, see update below). This allows most followers, who come from disenfranchised communities, to relate their beliefs to success…a success that is unapologetic and embraces a progressive urban black culture, rather than rejecting it.
Negative Perceptions of the Five Percent Nation (NGE).
While the Five Percent Nation emphasizes the importance of education and self-awareness, it can also be seen as a negative force that discourages equality amongst the diverse communities of the world…the Mentor Youth Street Academy website claims that “We [Five Percenters] do not believe in race mixing”. This alienation from the larger global community prevents the Five Percent Nation from expanding its reach beyond urban communities where the black race is of majority; thus, preserving the perception that the Five Percent Nation is a cult of the Nation of Islam (which itself is regarded as a cult of traditional Islam).
Positive Perceptions of the Five Percent Nation (NGE).
But, the other side of the coin allows a totally different, and positive, interpretation of the religion’s notion of extreme self-awareness exclusive to black peoples. What better way to motivate someone to change their life and improve their surroundings than to provide them with confidence. As Gods, black men realize that they have the power to change their situation for the better;and furthermore, break free of the vicious cycle of disenfranchisement that plagues the deteriorating African-American communities of the U.S. In fact…many Five Percenters encourage racial integration and strive to make a positive impact on the social condition of the world at large.

Apparently Busta Rhymes has allegedly converted to traditional Islam – in November of 2008 I wrote that he was a Five Percenter, since this is a well-known and documented fact… I haven’t been able to confirm the new rumor. I found two sources that people are using to claim this rumor is true: An old interview with Busta Rhymes from 2007 where he talks about Islam and an article on Al Arabiya that quotes Napolean, a Muslim revert and rapper himself, as saying that Busta Rhymes is amongst the many rappers that have recently converted to Islam.
Another rapper that has definitely converted to Islam, without doubt, is Amir Muhadith (formerly known as Loon) – check out this detailed interview with Al Jazeera.

There are several other rappers and musicians that are rumored to be Muslim like Akon and Ghostface Killah – but I’m not listing the ones I can’t confirm.

Peace. I am Freedom Allah. Thanks for taking the time out to write about us. I just wanted to say us being against the mixing of the races is referring to the mixing of the original people with Caucasian people. For the most part, we only acknowledge two kinds of people, the black or original people, and the Caucasian white people. All non-white people are original. We do not advocate the mixing of non-white people and original people. I also want to say that we are not anti-white. There are white Five Percenters as well. We teach the truth to all. Peace.

Why do you have to be POOR righteous teachers to be 5%ers??? Yall don’t teach prosperity in finances? What’s so effective and uplifting and inspiring about a man/woman who refers to him/herself as POOR RIGHTEOUS… It sounds like self-degrading. There’s nothing wrong with just being righteous alone… POOR RIGHTEOUS feels as if your organization doesn’t have attainable goals. Chas – the term Poor Righteous Teachers seems a bit more symbolic than anything. In fact, the word ‘Poor’ itself is subject to various interpretations…I think a sense of ‘modesty’ is the prevailing connotation here – a humble personality is often a prerequisite for achieving spiritual success.
In today’s world one can get caught up in chasing material dreams and aspiring to amass wealth – is modesty such a bad thing?

Again – as I mentioned in the original post, their beliefs can obviously be considered blasphemous, especially by those of the Abrahamic faiths – their are many five percenters that still believe in one supreme lord…so it can be argued that they claim to be gods on earth.

do you ever wonder if there is a greater power then yourself? When you say that Christian Leaders are keeping the truth from the other 85%, what exactly would they have to gain. Not every Christian is robbing folks for there money or misleading people for there own glory. It just seems alittle vain to think that you never need any one greater then yourself to pull you through in times of need. there is something amazing about the liberty you find when you release all guilt of your past and are able to start a new with Jesus Christ. Not a white mans god, but the God of all men and all nations.
by the way if you are called to enlighten the world, why do you remain five percent? If you were that sucessful at enlighting the people should that percentage be growing, 6, 7, 10%?

peace, if you have supreme mathematics truly then build a civilization outide of the present day civilization with your new mathematics and began rulership today in the earth on the physical level not just saying it on a spiritual or symbolic level, if the black man is in fact god then you should be able to use your mental power generating from the vibrational frequency of thought and be able to manifest your will in physical matter to show and prove your mental supremecy over all others or if not then your not the supreme being and you should just bow down to one with greater mental capacity that can affect things and move them according to his will

I am REALITY I GOD ALLAH, first let me say peace to all, second i wanted to respond to the comment about the gods being POOR RIGHTEOUS TEACHERS…we say that only because we offer our KnowLedge for free. If a curious mind wants to be fed we do so without cost..other religion’s sell there knowledge through newspapers(you know who you are)and other means even giving of money to your place of worship..knowledge is to shared not sold…we are not a gang as the FBI would call us, we are not a cult. The Father Allah put the Supreme Mathematics in motion because there are to many unanswered questions in everyday religion’s. It was and is a guide for people to elevate themselves and have a free dome(Freedom)..it is not for all just as muslims say Allah choices muslim’s…the Superme Math may not appeal to all..We are all GOD like when to live your life with Wisdom, Strength and Beauty…and that’s how man and woman should live..for all the bad things that have been written about us there are so many more positives that can be written…Peace

Peace, what is it that makes man god ? when mans physical structure returns to the earth is god dead and what becomes of the reality of that one when he is no longer able to pull the breath of life into his lungs ? we can say god is man but what is it that makes that statement true if god is the everlasting but yet man perishes daily and yeah a child is born daily as well thus creating a global balance to humanity, but even so if man is god but the physical part(body)- arm leg leg arm head of man is not everlasting and will dematerailize then what is actually the reality of god in relation to mans structure that makes him the supreme being of which being means to exist, how many forms of existence is it ?

If a curious mind wants to be fed we do so without cost..” Peace, I wanted to just speak on that comment of Reality I god Allah posted some days back I have in quotations, I partly agree, However in almost any religion you can go to there place of worship for free and learn what they are teaching, its no admission fee at the door to get in at a Mosque,Synangogue,church or Temple and most people of religion will talk to you about what they believe and why they beilieve it for free no fee so your answer as to why 5%ers are called POOR righteous teachers is some what untrue, why is it that in the 1-40 where its breaking down the total population of the earth its asks who is the 85%, who is the 10% then its says who is the 5% IN THE POOR PART OF THE EARTH ? so the land in which the 5% are teaching correlates to who they are teaching and circumstances or conditions that the people are in when they are found by the 5% wouldnt you think? so maybe the description can fit those whom the 5% should be civilizing not necessarily their own selves meaning when the 5% finds the 85% they are indeed RIGHTEOUS people by nature but have been made other than thier ownself and now theyre in a POOR mental,physical,spiritual and moral condition as well as being financially poor, due to the fact they were decieved and brought over here by the trader 379 years ago. so they have been experiencing nothing but hard times,hunger,naked, outofdoors and been beat and killed. with that being said thats also another reason why the 5% can be called POOR RIGHTEOUS TEACHERS, bcause the mission of the 5% is to civilize the 85% who can be said to be POOR in many senses of the word but also RIGHTEOUS by NATURE if you in fact believe that the ORIGINAL PEOPLE ARE ALLAH ! The whole phrase POOR RIGHTEOUS TEACHER is something thats been misunderstood by most people for so long, now lets look at it in a more pratical sense, I work at a school and there is a staff list of 5TH GRADE TEACHERS, 3RD GRADE TEACHERS ETC…. but that doesnt mean that the TEACHER is in 5th or 3rd grade, it means the PEOPLE they are teaching are in 3RD GRADE OR 5TH GRADE. so the words proceeding the word TEACHERS decscribes the ones who are being taught, so POOR RIGHTEOUS TEACHERS, THE 5% ARE TEACHERS OF THOSE WHO ARE POOR AND RIGHTEOUS, so it describes a relationship between the ones doing the teaching and those who are in need to be taught, TEAHERS OF POOR RIGHTEOUS PEOPLE = 5% THE POOR RIGHTEOUS TEACHERS

adeel what is ” REAL ISLAM ” ? I guess your referring to what prohet Mohammed taught along with the revelation of the Holy Quaran some 1400 yrs ago. The real question is what was the religion or the practice of the first human beings in the creation of the universe before prophet Mohammed(pbuh)1400 yrs ago ? its been proven that people have been on this planet for millions of years and if Allah is God and the originator of creation as hes called in the 35 Surah of the Quaran Al’Fatir (The Originator) then why would he wait thousands or millions of years up to the time of prophet Mohammed before giving the people who he created the ” right religion ” ? Islam as taught today by the “Scholars” and Imams of mecca isnt the pure form of of the truth of what the prophet taught because the prophet spoke in the hadiths of a deviation that would come three generations after him, to further prove my point look at the “real” Islam world today they are all divided up in sects and parties but when the prophet was here among the people there was no division, the division didnt come til after he left and the same happened with all other prophets in Quaran and bible with Isa(jesus) Musa (moses) and others, so the Quaran talks about how the muslims became divived once knowledge came to them, splitting the religion up into sect and parties each one rejoicing in its own part! that not the aim of Islam to create division among fellow muslims so what happened ? unity comes from true Islam as taught by the prophet some 1400yrs ago whats being taught today is a teaching which shatan (satan) has got his hands own creating division among the people based on a warped interpretation of what they think the prophet meant or what they think the Quaran means but the the Quaran itself says in it ” And none knows its interpretation save(except)Allah and those firmly rooted in knowledge say we believe in it.”

Hello Bekaun.. My day went very well how about yours? To answer ur question.. I don’t waste time nor do I like my time to be wasted.. I came across this site not looking for an answer to all my questions.. But for guidence as to how to find the answers to questions.. I was raised to believe in Jesus Christ I was raised to follow the bible and never doubt it… I’m a 20 yr old and thru my 20 yrs of living I’ve always had questions.. I’ve always had my own thoughts opinions and even doubts.. I’ve come to realize in order to find the answers to my questions I have to be willing to hear and remain open to communication even wen it seems scary crazy or even wrong.. The way you guys are writing comments makes it just about impossible to comprehend the points you are making. It seems that you have a lot of relevant things to say on the subject of the Five Percent Nation (NGE) but your comments are full of slang and jargon that the average layperson does not understand. This is creating a communication barrier for the people that wish to learn about the NGE.

My name is Shameka and I recently (like a month ago) awoke to the truth. I always felt there was something more to our exsitence than what was seen by the naked eye. I’ve been in search of knowledge and have visited many websites. I have aquired some knowledge, but thirst for more. I have a three yr old son and want to raise him in the way of the righteous. I’m just thankful that there are positive vibes here and you make those seeking knowledge feel comfortable to ask. Some of these social websites have, from what I’ve seen, have forums, but they argue amongst themselves.

The Nation of Gods and Earths seems to divide the human population of the Earth into two groups, but scientifically this is a difficult endeavor. Could someone please make an attempt at explaining this idea?
This may be a first step in clarifying what is meant by the `world population’. You state that the belief is that “5% of black people are chosen ‘Gods’ of the world”, and so on for the other 95%.
Is it really true that “5% of black people are chosen ‘Gods’ of the world”? That would seem to follow only if the world population consists only of black people, since the more common statement is that “5% of the world population are chosen ‘Gods’ of the world”.

You have to speak their language, which often times, isn’t just “Spanish”, bu the political, cultural and socio-economic language that runs through the varying countries.
On this day of knowledge born, make sure the knowledge you are making born is “whole” within ones’ self, so that you can enable that person or people to add a cipher on to the knowledge you are giving them. Maximize your overall effectiveness in communicating with the world!

@13th Disciple- Your “Israelite” roots are revealed in your rhetoric brother and you sound more of a disciple of Yahweh Ben Yahweh, considering you are in Atlanta as well. Please refrain for trying to pass yourself off as a member of the 5% Nation of Gods and Earths.
Teaching the people should not be about “advertising” or competing to show which one’s way, culture, religion or science is the “truth”. Irregardless to what one believes none of us are immune to racism, poverty, disenfranchisement, etc. No one’s way or path has lead Original people or any people, collectively out of and away from the conditions creating by imperialism. So while we compete amongst each other for the attention and interest of the people, our children are dying and we fall to organize ourselves into a formidable economic and political force in America.
The bottom line is education & economics. Give the people something tangible. Stop trying to sell the people dreams via spiritual-isms and confusing esoteric meanderings.
Instead, create an environment of affluence and opportunity that naturally attracts people. Allow them to chose for themselves which road they want to take in life.

YAH put curses on his chosen people the children of Yisreal(modern day blacks) and he said we would be turned over to another people who will take all of our might out of our hands. Shaloam my brother im glad to be able to associate my knowledge with other peoples knowledge such as yours. we must continue to give our people the truth about who we really are because its our lost identity that hurts us the most. Psalms 83:4 YAH talks about how are enemies will use crafty council to make our name(israel) to but cut off as a nation and to be no more in remembrance. shaloam my good brother lord Lamiek i agree with you mostly in your thoughts. we cant blame everything on the caucasoids because we did seperate ourselves from YAH by disobeying the laws he gave us. deuteronomy 27:1 moses told israel to keep all the commandments in which i command you this day that was given o him by YAH and then deuteronomy 28:15 warns israel what will happen to them if they disobeyed the laws, he said curses will come upon thee and overtake thee. Well we chose to break the laws given to us by YAH so he put curses upon us and the breaking of the laws seperated us from him. the book of deuteronomy chapter 28 and 29 speaks of the curses as well as levicticus chapter 26. but the good thing is YAH has not cast us away isaih 41:8-9 says he has not cast us away and so does romans 11:1-3 and levicticus 26:44 in fact he speaks of saving us african americans who are isrealies/hebrews/jews in the scriptures romans 11:26-27 speaks of saving us and so does zachariah 8:7-8 and luke 1:71. To be honest the messiah Yahshua only died for israel and no one else acts 13:23-24 says YAH raised unto israel a saviour and acts 5:31 YAH exalted Yahshua to be a prince and saviour to isreal and to give repentance to israel and forgiveness of sins. we all know christians say God so loved the world he gave his only begotten son, but when he says world he means israel(african americans) amos 3:2 YAH says to israel “you only have i known of all the families of the earth” meaning his world is israel and everyone else are outsiders who come from noahs three sons. Shaloam my good friend, YAH created the universe that holds the sun, the stars, the moon, the atoms and protons and the body that he gave us he created from the dust of the ground yeah the original man is all shade of brown like the earth and our bodies have some of the same particles as the universe. I want to know, why on earth would a creation of Allah claim to be allah. I am a muslim, i submit to my creator just as you do. I am a black person, Allah created us in tribes so we can recognize one another but mankind is naught but one nation. How on earth do you come to the conclusion that you are ALlah or God? you submit to his laws, you cant say i wont sleep, i wont eat, i wont drink, i wont die. You will die, you voluntary or involuntarily submit to the LAWS of ALLah not your own laws. Your are not your own sustainer you do not create the earth or the universe or design a the human being, you do not provide for your own selves let alone another human being. WHAT MAKES YOU THINK YOU ARE GOD!!!!
